River Club - #18 - Hole Spotlight
3 REASONS YOU WANT TO PLAY RIVER CLUB AS PART OF THE APRIL 2-PLAY GOLF PACKAGELinks Magazine ranked Pawleys Island the 10th best island in golf, and you can count River Club among the reasons for the area’s substantial appeal.River Club is one of the best courses in Pawleys Island. The Tom Jackson design is a Lowcountry classic, set amidst land that was once home to a thriving rice plantation and continues to retain its abundant southern charm.River Club opened in 1985, making it just the second Pawleys Island golf course, and the layout is better heading into the spring of 2017 than it has ever been.(For the record, if you want to play River Club, the April 2-Round Special, pairing it with Litchfield Country Club, one of Myrtle Beach’s most venerable layouts, is a winner. The special can be booked through Ambassador Golf & Beach, the area’s largest golf package provider, and it starts at just $116.)What do you need to know before teeing it up at River Club? We have answers:1. Contrary to the name, the course doesn’t play along a river, but that doesn’t mean water isn’t a defining feature of the layout, coming into play on 15 of 18 holes. The watery challenges are highlighted by the par 5 18th, which has been voted one of the Grand Strand’s Dream 18.The risk-reward par 5 is reachable in two for (very) long hitters, but the approach requires a carry over water and your ball must fly to the green. Even played as a conventional, three-shot hole, the approach can be daunting, and with the clubhouse as the backdrop, it’s always beautiful.2. Don’t come up short at River Club. The layout isn’t exceedingly long at 6,240 yards from the white tees (6,670 yards from the tips), but most of the trouble is in front of the green – in the form of water or sand – so pull an extra club and make sure you reach the putting surface. The fairways are generous and the greens are conducive to making putts, so River Club is a second shot course. If your irons are dialed in, the opportunity to go low will be there.3. Be ready when you arrive at the 15th tee, a 384-yard par 4, from the white tees. The dogleg right requires a carry over water off the tee and on the approach to a narrow green that is flanked by bunkers. The 15th is the hardest hole on the course, but make par or even bogey, and the potential for a strong finish awaits. For more info on playing River Club as part of the April 2-Play special, visit the Ambassador Golf & Beach website or email info@ambassadorgolf.com.
